Wildlife
Much of the wildlife at
Latchygors centres round the lake.
We have a resident population of mallards
and moorhens.
Dabchicks and coots come in the spring to
nest.
Canada geese visit in the winter.
We have had up to 40 of them here at one
time – and very noisy they are too.
A variety of other water birds also visit
the lake, depending on the season.
In the spring the lake is home to many tadpoles, mainly toad, but also some frog and palmate newt. The summer sees the hatching of several different species of dragonfly and damselfly and a demoiselle is often sighted.
Perhaps, if you are lucky, you will spot an otter.
It’s not easy, as they do not come very
often, but we have seen them and so have some of our visitors.
Many different species of wild birds can be seen,
including the Red Kite, which are appearing more and more often.
The bird table outside the cottage window
is a very popular feature with our visitors.
(We provide the seed and nuts.)
Wildflowers are abundant and, in the early summer, our traditional hay meadows are a delight to look at. There are plenty of insects and small mammals to be found. Just be aware and you should find plenty to interest you here if you area lover of wildlife.
